WHAT IS A PHOTO GICLEE

The original photograph is digitally scanned and then printed in the most archival water-based organic inks available (65+ years) on a state-of-the-art Iris inkjet printer. Watercolor paper or cotton duck canvas is attached to the Iris drum that sprays ink onto the surface at more than 4 million drops per second. The result is a museum quality print with tremendous resolution!

Giclee prints are displayed at major museums throughout the world including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the British Museum.

Arlene's Photo GicleeS on PAPER are printed on  heavyweight, slightly textured acid-free watercolor paper (Somerset Velvet Radiant White) that gives the photo an antique look, like one found in an old African steamer trunk. They are finished with a border, a UV coating and a hand deckled edge.

Arlene's Photo GicleeS on Canvas  (cotton duck) are treated with special UV light retardant and light stabilizer post coatings that give a sheen to the photo. The canvas is stretched with staples to the back so they don't need to be framed.

Sibling Pressure” PE013 giclee of photo
© Arlene Gawne 1999

This newborn is receiving overly firm handling from its sibling! After enjoying 3 to 5 years of a mother’s undivided attention, the older calf may resent the newcomer. But its mother won’t tolerate any rough handling and will administer justice with a firm trunk. Addo Elephant N.P., South Africa

The Watchful Eye PE002 giclee of photo
© Arlene Gawne 1999

Under the watchful gaze of its mother, a newborn Addo elephant unfurls its
kite-sized ears. This can take a few days because the baby’s ears were firmly pressed against its head during the 22 long months  of development in its mother’s womb. Addo Elephant N.P., South Africa.

Friends PE014 giclee of photo
© Arlene Gawne 1999

A baby elephant is fortunate if there is a calf of similar size and age in its
family herd, so it can play comfortably with someone of its own strength.
This pair appears to be comparing experiences as they leave the daily
hubbub of Hapoor waterhole.
